Introducing Julie Kiraly! Julie is an fantastic social dancer and award-winning Lindy Hop performer and competitor who runs and teaches at the Sugar Swing Dance Club in Edmonton, Alberta. Since they first met at the Herrang Dance Camp (2007), Nathan and Julie have enjoyed great chemistry on the social dance floor at major swing dance events. After a recent flurry of fun dances at Camp Jitterbug 2013, Nathan & Julie felt inspired to team up and put together an afternoon of workshop classes in San Francisco!

Morning Session – Intermediate/Advanced Lindy Hop
(for students dancing at the Intermediate Level for more than 6 months)
11am – 12:20pm Special Topics with Julie & Nathan

LUNCH BREAK

Afternoon Session / Main Workshop – Intermediate Lindy Hop
(for students dancing at the Intermediate Level for at least 1-6 months)

1 – 2:15pm Getting Dizzy With It – Turn Fundamentals
2:30 – 3:45pm Creativity & Play – Jazz & Improvisation within Lindy Hop

Level Descriptions:

Intermediate Lindy Hop – you have been dancing at the Intermediate level for at least 1 – 6 months including taking regular classes and social dancing at least once a week. You can comfortably dance the following patterns: swingout from closed & open, lindy circle, 8-count turns, 6-count turns, tuck turns, side-by-side Charleston & other basic Charleston patterns.

Intermediate/Advanced Lindy Hop – you have been dancing at the Intermediate level for 6 months or more, are taking Intermediate classes for a second or third time through to get all the nitty gritty details, and are out social dancing like crazy. You can confidently dance all the basic patterns mentioned for the Intermediate level, plus lead and follow variations of those patterns. You’ve taken other workshop classes and/or have taken classes with a few different teachers to get different perspectives on the dance.

About the Instructors

Julie_PortraitJulie Kiraly

Julie Kiraly has been an avid lover of all things swing since 2002. Over the years she has shared her love of Lindy Hop, Charleston, Balboa, Vintage Jazz, Blues, and Burlesque both locally and across western Canada, teaching workshops and classes in Edmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, and Vancouver. With an impassioned sense to learn, she has travelled to various cities across the world for swing dance training and competitions. Highlights include Herrang Dance Camp in Sweden, the Frankie95 Festival in New York City, Lindy Bout in Vancouver, the Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown in New Orleans, and Camp Jitterbug in Seattle. Julie is a social dancer, teacher, choreographer, performer, and competitor. She is the co-leader of the vintage dance troupe Mad Cat Swing and a Lindy Bout Champion. As a teacher, Julie is fun and enthusiastic in class and loves to make her students laugh.

Nathan ThinkingNathan Dias

Nathan specializes in Lindy Hop, the high-energy swing dance from the 1930s and 40s, and has been teaching, performing and DJing since 2005. He started swing dancing in 1997 and lindy hopping in 2000. A regular dancer in San Francisco since 2001, Nathan enjoys the creativity and personal connection of social dancing as well as the challenge and satisfaction on working on and improving his dance.

He has taught at practically all of the local swing dance venues at one time or another, including the 9:20 Special, Lindy in the Park, Tuesday Night Jump, Rent Party and original Doghouse, and has been a featured instructor at regional workshops such as Swingin’ at the Savoy, California Swingin’, *Workshop (San Luis Obispo), Santa Swing (Santa Barbara), and Le Hot Sauce (SF).
